Singapore is set to embark on a significant upgrade to its nationwide broadband network with an investment of up to S$100 million. This initiative, announced by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), aims to propel internet speeds up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps), benefiting over half a million households by 2028.
Decades in the Making
This substantial investment marks a pivotal moment, coming nearly two decades after the inception of Singapore’s first nationwide broadband network. The upgrade process is scheduled to commence in mid-2024 and is expected to span until 2026, with enhanced bandwidth services anticipated to roll out as early as next year.
Budget 2024: Catalyzing Future-Ready Investments
The commitment to bolster the broadband network was highlighted in Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s Budget 2024 address. Wong, who also serves as the Finance Minister, outlined the government’s strategy to foster investments that will ensure mass market access to unprecedented speeds of up to 10Gbps in the latter half of this decade, setting a new standard for internet connectivity in Singapore.
