Singapore experienced significant disruptions due to intense rainfall on Saturday (May 4), which triggered multiple flash flood warnings across the city. The national water agency, PUB, reported that the western part of Singapore recorded rainfall equivalent to 65 percent of the typical monthly average for May within just six hours.
Widespread Flood Warnings
The first flash flood warning was issued at approximately 6:55 AM for the junction of Mountbatten Road and Tanjong Katong Road South. As the day progressed, similar alerts were extended to multiple areas including Craig Road in Tanjong Pagar, Upper Paya Lebar Road, Jalan Seaview in the Marine Parade area, and Jalan Boon Lay in the west, among others.
Impact on Changi Airport
The adverse weather conditions also affected operations at Changi Airport, with several flights experiencing delays due to the heavy downpours. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updated travel information as the situation evolved throughout the day.
Public Safety Measures
In response to the flooding, PUB urged residents and commuters to avoid affected areas and adhere to safety advisories. Emergency response teams were deployed to manage the situation and assist in areas where water levels rose dangerously high.
This episode highlights the challenges that extreme weather events pose to urban infrastructure and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of changing climate patterns.
