Shook Lin & Bok, a prominent Singapore law firm, has confirmed it was the victim of a ransomware attack that occurred on April 9. The firm detected the breach and promptly responded by engaging a cybersecurity team to contain the threat by the early hours of April 10.
Security Measures and Data Integrity
The law firm reassured clients and stakeholders that there is currently no evidence to suggest that its core document management systems, which house sensitive client data, were compromised. Operations continue as normal while the firm collaborates with cybersecurity experts to mitigate any potential impacts from the intrusion.
Ransom Payment Claims
A report from SuspectFile, a website that tracks ransomware activities, claims that Shook Lin & Bok paid a ransom of US$1.4 million in Bitcoin to the Akira ransomware group. It is reported that the original demand was US$2 million, but the amount was reduced following negotiations that lasted a week.
Response from Authorities
The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) is aware of the cyberattack and has offered assistance to the affected law firm as it navigates the aftermath of the security breach. The agency continues to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to ensure the firm’s operations and client data remain secure.
