Singapore is set to begin preparatory work in 2025 to integrate three existing MRT stations—Tanah Merah, Expo, and Changi Airport—into the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). This initiative is part of a strategic development to provide a direct MRT route from Changi Airport to the city center.
Future Infrastructure Plans
The modifications at these stations are aimed at transitioning them from the East-West Line (EWL) to the TEL, facilitating smoother transit and enhanced connectivity. This effort supports the vision outlined in the 2040 Land Transport Master Plan announced in 2019, which includes the extension of the TEL to Sungei Bedok and the upcoming Terminal 5, expected to open in the mid-2030s.
Extension and Enhancement
Once these modifications are complete, the section of the EWL from Changi Airport to Tanah Merah will be rebranded as part of the TEL, creating seamless travel for commuters and supporting Singapore’s growing transport needs. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has called for tenders to appoint a contractor for this critical infrastructure project, marking a significant step towards enhancing Singapore’s public transport system.
