In a heartbreaking turn of events, a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) regular lost his life early on Thursday, May 16, following a valiant effort to extinguish a fire aboard a China-flagged tanker, Sheng Hang Hua 6, anchored in the southwest of Singapore. The tanker was attended by firefighters from the West Coast Marine Fire Station, who bravely boarded the vessel to tackle the blaze.

During the firefighting operations, a team was dispatched into the engine room to support the ongoing efforts. It was there they discovered the rota commander, a leading officer in the operation, incapacitated at the bottom of a staircase. Despite being conscious initially, his condition rapidly deteriorated, prompting an immediate evacuation.

The officer was swiftly evacuated to the Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal, where he was transferred to an SCDF ambulance and rushed to the National University Hospital.
