On Tuesday, June 11, Singapore Airlines (SIA) issued an apology and announced monetary compensation for the 211 passengers on flight SQ321, which experienced severe turbulence. The incident on May 20 resulted in dozens of injuries and the tragic death of one passenger.
Compensation for Minor Injuries
SIA has offered US$10,000 (S$13,500) in compensation to passengers who sustained minor injuries during the turbulence. The airline communicated these offers to all affected passengers on Monday.
Assistance for More Serious Injuries
For those who suffered more serious injuries, SIA has extended an invitation to discuss personalized compensation offers. These discussions are intended to address each passenger’s specific needs once they are ready and able. Additionally, passengers who require long-term medical care due to serious injuries will receive an advance payment of US$25,000 to cover immediate expenses. This amount will be deducted from the final compensation package they receive.
Additional Measures for All Passengers
In addition to injury-related compensation, SIA is providing a full refund of the airfare for all passengers of SQ321, regardless of whether they were injured. Furthermore, passengers will receive delay compensation in compliance with European Union or United Kingdom regulations, ensuring that all passengers are adequately compensated for the disruption.
