An aircraft transporting Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima, along with nine other individuals, has gone missing, according to an official statement from the president’s office. The aircraft, operated by the Malawi Defence Force, lost radar contact shortly after departing from the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday morning.
Immediate Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated
Following the loss of contact with the aircraft, President Lazarus Chakwera immediately ordered a comprehensive search and rescue operation. The aircraft was initially scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport in the northern region of Malawi at around 10:00 AM local time.
President’s Travel Plans Altered
The gravity of the situation led President Chakwera to cancel his planned departure to the Bahamas, which was set for Monday evening. The president was briefed on the disappearance by the commander of the Defence Force.
Uncertainty Over the Cause
The specific reasons behind the aircraft’s disappearance remain unclear, and authorities are continuing their efforts to locate Vice-President Chilima and the other passengers. The nation waits anxiously for further updates as search teams work against the clock.
