Two shipping companies, Hellenic Overseas Maritime Enterprises and Leth Incargo Marine Services, have been formally charged for polluting Singapore waters. Each firm is accused of discharging approximately 100 liters of oil during separate incidents, contributing to environmental contamination.
Specific Charges and Events
The charges stem from violations under the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea Act. Leth Incargo Marine Services, responsible for the tanker Pacific A Dorodchi, allegedly allowed oil to spill during a fuel transfer from the tanker Maria Cosulich in November 2022 at Eastern Bunkering Anchorage A. Similarly, Hellenic Overseas Maritime Enterprises’ tanker, Star Prosperity, is accused of spilling oil in January 2023 while receiving fuel from MT Decorum due to a malfunctioning valve.
Legal Repercussions
The laws governing such incidents are stringent, reflecting Singapore’s commitment to maintaining its maritime environment. The implicated parties—including the ship’s master, owner, and agent—face potential imprisonment of up to two years and fines ranging from S$1,000 to S$1 million. The severity of these penalties underscores the seriousness with which Singapore treats environmental protection, especially in its busy shipping lanes.
