Fatal Incident at Choa Chu Kang Waterworks
A second worker has succumbed to his injuries following a toxic gas incident at PUB’s Choa Chu Kang Waterworks in Singapore. The 24-year-old Malaysian national, employed by Stargroup Est, a contractor for PUB, passed away on the night of May 28 after a week-long battle in intensive care.
Details of the Incident
The tragedy unfolded on May 23, when three workers were exposed to hydrogen sulphide gas during routine tank cleaning operations. The workers were involved in draining sludge from one of the plant’s pulsator tanks, a by-product of the water treatment process. Hydrogen sulphide, a highly toxic and flammable gas with a potent odor, is known for its deadly properties in high concentrations.
Immediate Response and Medical Treatment
All three workers were immediately taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Tragically, a 40-year-old Indian national died on the same day as the incident. The two Malaysian workers were placed in intensive care, where the 24-year-old later died despite receiving all necessary medical treatments.
Current Status of Surviving Worker
The third worker, a 39-year-old Malaysian, has been moved out of the ICU and his condition has stabilized. This update provides a small glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim situation.
