Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has taken a significant step towards sustainability by entering into an agreement with the refinery Neste to purchase 1,000 tonnes of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initiative marks a milestone for SIA and its subsidiary, Scoot, as they will be the first airlines at Changi Airport to utilize SAF produced in Singapore.
Details of the Sustainable Fuel Delivery
According to a joint media release by SIA, Scoot, and Neste, the SAF will be delivered to Changi Airport’s fuel hydrant system in two separate batches. The first batch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, followed by a second batch in the fourth quarter of this year. This strategic approach ensures that the integration of SAF into their operations is seamless and efficient, aligning with existing safety specifications by blending the SAF with conventional jet fuel.
The Environmental Benefits of SAF
SAF is not derived from petroleum but from organic or waste-derived materials, known as feedstock. This makes it a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuels. Neste’s production of SAF utilizes renewable waste and residue raw materials. When used in its unblended form, SAF can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions—by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to fossil jet fuel, as highlighted by SIA, Scoot, and Neste. This substantial reduction underscores the potential of SAF to be a game-changer in reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint.
Leading the Charge in Green Aviation
By opting for SAF, SIA and Scoot are not just adapting to environmental trends but are setting a precedent for the global aviation industry. Their commitment to sustainable fuel solutions at Changi Airport places them at the forefront of the aviation sector’s shift towards greener alternatives. This initiative is likely to encourage other airlines to consider the integration of SAF into their fuel strategies, promoting a broader movement towards sustainability in aviation globally.
