A British man has sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a shark near the shore of the Caribbean island of Tobago. The 64-year-old victim is currently receiving critical care following serious injuries to his left arm, left leg, and stomach.
Attack Near Courland Bay
The attack occurred on Friday about 10 metres from the shore in Courland Bay, located on the island’s north coast. Local authorities believe the shark involved in the incident was a bull shark, estimated to be 8 to 10 ft (2.4m to 3m) long and 2 ft (60cm) wide.
Medical Response and Current Condition
The injured man was rushed to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition and is receiving intensive care. According to a press briefing by Tobago House of Assembly Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, the man is “stable and doing well” but remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), kept under sedation.
Extensive Medical Treatment Required
Chief Secretary Augustine noted that the man had undergone surgery to reattach some fingers but still had “significant wounds” to one of his legs, requiring extensive medical work. Medical professionals are focused on stabilising the patient and ensuring that as much as possible can be done to save his life and limbs.
Support from Foreign Office
The British Foreign Office has confirmed it is providing support to the victim’s family following the attack. Further details about the victim’s recovery and ongoing medical care are expected in the coming days.
Shark Attacks in Tobago
While shark attacks are rare in the Caribbean, the incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers in ocean environments. Local authorities are expected to continue monitoring the area and provide guidance to ensure public safety.
