The final accused in the 2019 Orchard Towers fatal fight has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murder. Tan Sen Yang, 32, received the sentence along with 12 strokes of the cane for the killing of 31-year-old Satheesh Noel Gobidass, who died from a stab wound to the neck after a fight at Orchard Towers on July 2, 2019.
Justice Aedit Abdullah delivered the verdict, noting that the prosecution did not seek the death penalty. Tan Sen Yang’s conviction followed the reduction of charges against six other people initially involved in the case. Those who had their charges reduced were Joel Tan Yun Sheng, Chan Jia Xing, Ang Da Yuan, Loo Boon Chong, Tan Hong Sheng, and Natalie Siow Yu Zhen.
Tan was the only one left facing a murder charge after his alleged accomplices had their charges changed. The case dates back to a violent confrontation at Orchard Towers, one of Singapore’s most high-profile entertainment venues. The incident and subsequent trial attracted significant media attention due to its violent nature and high-profile location.
The sentencing of Tan Sen Yang brings closure to a case that had gripped public attention in Singapore. Life imprisonment for murder represents one of the most severe penalties in the Singaporean justice system.
