Singapore Airlines (SIA) has had to reroute a Dubai-bound flight to Oman after unprecedented rainfall led to severe flooding at Dubai International Airport. Flight SQ494, which departed from Singapore, was redirected to Muscat International Airport on April 16, amid disruptions caused by the extreme weather conditions in the United Arab Emirates.
Immediate Response and Accommodations
Upon landing in Muscat, SIA coordinated with local authorities to secure immigration clearance for the 307 passengers and 14 crew members onboard. The airline arranged accommodations at local hotels for all affected individuals as they await their subsequent travel. SIA has plans to continue the journey to Dubai with the same Airbus A350-900 aircraft once clearance is received and after the crew has completed the required rest.
Impact on Flight Schedules
Additionally, the adverse weather in Dubai prompted the cancellation of two scheduled flights between Singapore and Dubai on April 17. The cancellations affect both flight SQ494 from Singapore to Dubai and the return flight SQ495.
Ongoing Monitoring and Customer Communication
An SIA spokesperson emphasized the fluidity of the situation and assured that the airline is keeping a close watch and will update passengers on any further changes. Travelers affected by these disruptions are encouraged to check the SIA website for the latest information regarding their flights.
This rerouting and the subsequent response highlight the challenges airlines face during extreme weather events and underscore SIA’s commitment to passenger safety and comfort under unpredictable circumstances.
