An Indonesian national, known only as Brick, has been incarcerated and sentenced to additional caning after illegally entering Singapore for the fifth time. At the age of 26, Brick’s history of immigration offences dates back to 2017, with prior sentences amounting to a total of 25 strokes of the cane.
This time, Brick ventured from Batam, Indonesia to the shores of Singapore in a small boat, later resorting to swimming to evade detection. Upon arrest in March, lacking any legal documentation, Brick was unable to prove his lawful presence in Singapore. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers, through fingerprint analysis, linked him to previous offences under the same name.
Brick’s most recent conviction prior to this incident was in November 2019, for similar breaches of the Immigration Act. He had been deported after serving a year in prison and receiving eight strokes of the cane, along with a stern notice barring him from re-entry without explicit authorization from Singapore authorities.
Ignoring the prohibition, Brick attempted to infiltrate Singapore again in late June 2023, employing a rudimentary floating device to reach Tuas from his abandoned sampan. He managed to remain undetected for approximately nine months until his apprehension by ICA officers.
For his relentless defiance of Singapore’s immigration laws, Brick has been handed a one-and-a-half-year prison sentence coupled with nine strokes of the cane, underscoring the stringent repercussions for repeated illegal entry.
