Nine Dead and 48 Missing After Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Canary Islands
At least nine people have drowned, and 48 others remain missing after a migrant boat capsized off Spain’s Canary Islands overnight. Rescue services responded to a distress call and managed to save 27 of the 84 people believed to have been aboard the vessel, which is thought to have departed from Mauritania.
Rescue Efforts Continue as Dozens Remain Unaccounted For
The boat capsized near El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic, shortly after midnight on Saturday. Sea rescue teams are continuing their efforts to locate the missing migrants. According to survivors, the boat had embarked from the town of Nuadibu in Mauritania, approximately 800 km away.
Survivors Report Higher Number of Passengers
Survivors indicated that the boat may have been carrying up to 90 people, raising concerns that even more individuals could be missing. Among those rescued, four were minors, according to Anselmo Pestana, head of the Canary Islands prefecture. This incident is the latest in a series of migrant boat tragedies occurring off the west coast of Africa.
