Six Dead as Floods and Landslides Hit Japan’s Quake-Stricken Region
At least six people have died, and 10 others remain missing after heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding and landslides in Japan’s Ishikawa Peninsula, a region still recovering from a devastating earthquake earlier this year. The flooding inundated emergency housing built for residents who lost their homes in the January earthquake along the Sea of Japan coast.
Flooding Severely Affects Communities Already Impacted by Earthquake
The heavy rain caused nearly two dozen rivers to overflow, further devastating the region as floods inundated homes and blocked roads. Public broadcaster NHK reported that over 100 communities have been cut off due to the blocked roads, exacerbating the challenges faced by a population still reeling from the earthquake.
Rescue Efforts Underway as Casualties Rise
As rescue operations continue, authorities are working to reach those stranded by the floodwaters. Kyodo news agency reported that emergency services are struggling to access isolated communities, raising concerns for the safety of the missing individuals. The natural disaster has compounded the difficulties faced by residents, who were just beginning to rebuild their lives following the January quake.
