Torrential Rain Triggers Landslides and Floods in Northern Japan
Heavy rains have battered Japan’s north-central Noto region, triggering landslides and floods that have left one person dead and several others missing. The deluge caused rivers to overflow, flooding homes and leaving some residents stranded in affected areas.
Highest Level of Rain Alert Issued in Ishikawa Prefecture
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest level of alert for heavy rainfall across several cities in the Ishikawa prefecture. The cities of Suzu and Wajima, located on the northern coast of the Noto peninsula, were among the hardest hit by the flooding and landslides.
Fatalities and Missing Persons Reported in Flooded Areas
In Suzu, one person was reported dead after being swept away by floodwaters, while another individual is still missing. In the nearby town of Noto, another person has also gone missing. In Wajima, four construction workers are missing after a landslide occurred at a site where repairs were underway following the January earthquake. One additional person is missing in the city due to floods in a separate area.
Region Struggles to Recover Amid New Disaster
The Noto region, still recovering from a significant earthquake in January, has been hit hard by this new natural disaster. With search and rescue operations underway, local authorities are bracing for more potential damage as heavy rain continues to affect the region.
