Starting December 28, adults in Singapore who pay for public transport using cards will face a 10-cent increase per train or bus ride. The fare hike, announced by the Public Transport Council (PTC) on September 9 following its annual review, marks a 6% increase in fares as part of the government’s efforts to address rising operational costs.
Concessionary Fare Increase for Seniors, Students, and Others
The fare adjustments will also affect concessionary groups, including seniors, students, people with disabilities, and low-wage workers. For these groups, card-paying commuters will see a fare increase of 4 cents per journey. This increase is lower than the hike for adult fares, aiming to ease the financial burden on those who rely heavily on public transport.
Impact of the Fare Increase
The PTC explained that the fare increase is necessary to ensure the sustainability of Singapore’s public transport system, which has seen rising operating costs. Despite the increase, the council emphasized that concessionary groups continue to receive subsidized rates, and efforts will be made to support lower-income families through assistance schemes.
