Four Victims Suffocated in Air Pocket During Superyacht Tragedy
Four of the seven victims of the Bayesian superyacht sinking off the coast of Sicily last month tragically suffocated after being trapped in an air pocket as oxygen levels depleted, according to Italian news agency Ansa. Post-mortem examinations revealed that the victims, including banking executive Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo, did not drown as originally suspected.
Oxygen Depletion Led to Suffocation
Investigators believe the cabin where the victims were trapped became sealed off during the sinking, forming an air pocket. As the oxygen levels in the pocket dwindled, carbon dioxide began to accumulate, leading to suffocation. None of the four victims had water in their lungs, which confirmed that drowning was not the cause of death, according to the post-mortem findings.
Violent Storm Led to Yacht’s Sinking
The incident occurred during a violent storm that overwhelmed the superyacht, ultimately causing it to sink. Among the other victims were British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch, and the yacht’s chef Ricardo Thomas. The tragic event has shaken both the families involved and the broader community, as more details of the harrowing experience continue to emerge.
Investigators Continue to Probe the Incident
Italian authorities are continuing their investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht, focusing on how the violent storm caused the vessel to capsize and the specific circumstances that led to the deaths of all seven victims.
