A collision between a Singapore-flagged container ship and an Australian vessel at Fremantle Port in Perth on Friday, August 30, resulted in injuries to two crew members aboard the Australian ship.
Incident Involving Maersk Shekou and STS Leeuwin II
The incident occurred as the Maersk Shekou, a Singapore-flagged container vessel, was maneuvering into the harbour. The ship, which was being assisted by four tugs and under pilotage, collided with the STS Leeuwin II, Australia’s largest sail-training ship, which was docked at the port.
Damage and Injuries Reported
The collision caused the mast of the STS Leeuwin II to collapse and inflicted damage on the hull of the Maersk Shekou. Additionally, the nearby Maritime Museum reportedly sustained roof damage due to the impact. Two crew members aboard the Australian ship were injured in the incident, while all 26 crew members on the Maersk Shekou were reported to be safe with no injuries.
Investigation and Response
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, and emergency services responded quickly to assist the injured crew members. The incident has raised concerns about the safety protocols in place during harbour operations, especially when large vessels are involved.
