The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that bicycles and kick scooters will be banned from footpaths adjacent to cycling lanes starting in July 2025. This new regulation aims to create safer pedestrian environments.
Conversion to Pedestrian-Only Paths
LTA will be converting these footpaths into pedestrian-only paths, allowing access only to pedestrians and users of personal mobility aids. The decision is part of an effort to enhance safety and reduce conflicts between different types of path users.
Enforcement Begins July 2025
The enforcement of the new rule will begin in July next year, providing an adjustment period for current path users. During this time, cyclists and kick scooter users will need to adapt to the changes and shift to using the designated cycling lanes instead.
Current Regulations and Future Changes
Currently, bicycles and non-motorised personal mobility devices (PMDs), such as kick scooters, are permitted on footpaths adjacent to cycling lanes. However, under the existing code of conduct for active mobility, users are encouraged to stay within their respective lanes. The upcoming rule will formalize this practice by restricting footpath access to pedestrians and those using mobility aids.
Improving Safety for Pedestrians
The move is intended to improve the safety and comfort of pedestrians, particularly in areas where footpaths and cycling lanes run parallel. LTA believes this measure will reduce the potential for accidents and enhance the overall experience for footpath users.
