A fire broke out in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Clementi on the evening of August 8, prompting the evacuation of approximately 35 residents. The blaze is believed to have been caused by a power-assisted bicycle (PAB) battery charging in a bedroom.
Cause of the Fire
Preliminary investigations by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) suggest that the fire originated from the battery pack of an e-bike. The incident occurred in a 12th-floor unit, with the fire quickly engulfing the bedroom’s contents.
Swift Response by Firefighters
Firefighters arrived promptly at the scene and extinguished the blaze using a water jet. Fortunately, the occupants of the affected unit had already evacuated before the SCDF’s arrival, ensuring their safety.
Evacuation and Safety Measures
Around 35 residents were evacuated from the HDB block as a precautionary measure. No injuries were reported from the incident. SCDF personnel assessed one individual from a neighboring unit for smoke inhalation, but the person declined further medical attention and did not require hospitalization.
Importance of Battery Safety
This incident highlights the potential hazards associated with charging e-bike batteries indoors. Residents are urged to follow safety guidelines and ensure that battery charging is conducted safely to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
