Massive Rubble Clearance Operation
A United Nations assessment has revealed that it will take a fleet of over one hundred lorries approximately 15 years to clear Gaza of nearly 40 million tonnes of war rubble. The operation is estimated to cost between $500 million (£394 million) and $600 million.
Immense Rebuilding Challenge
The findings highlight the enormous challenge of rebuilding the Palestinian territory after months of a devastating Israeli offensive. The destruction has severely impacted homes and infrastructure, necessitating extensive reconstruction efforts.
Damage Assessment
According to the UN Environment Programme’s assessment published last month, 137,297 buildings in Gaza have been damaged, accounting for more than half of the total buildings. Of these, just over a quarter were completely destroyed, about a tenth were severely damaged, and a third sustained moderate damage.
Context of the Conflict
The conflict began in October when Hamas launched a surprise attack into southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 250 others. The ensuing Israeli offensive in Gaza has led to the deaths of more than 38,000 people, according to Palestinian officials in the territory. The extensive damage underscores the need for a significant and prolonged rebuilding effort.
