A Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore, designated as SQ321, experienced severe turbulence leading to tragic outcomes. The incident occurred shortly after the plane departed from London’s Heathrow Airport at 10:38 PM local time on Monday, May 20. Amidst the turbulence, which struck while breakfast was being served, the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.
Casualties and Emergency Response
The turbulence proved fatal for a 73-year-old British man, who is believed to have suffered a heart attack during the ordeal. In addition to the fatality, seven other passengers sustained critical injuries, primarily head injuries due to the severe shaking of the aircraft. Emergency medical teams responded as the plane diverted to Bangkok, where the critically injured were promptly taken for medical care.
Hospitalizations and Onboard Impact
Out of the 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board the Boeing 777-300ER, a total of eighteen people were hospitalized, with twelve still receiving treatment. The sudden and violent nature of the air pocket that the aircraft fell into created a perilous situation for everyone on board, highlighting the unpredictable nature of air travel.
