Presidential hopeful George Goh expressed his confidence on Tuesday, June 13, regarding his chances in the upcoming Presidential Election. Reflecting on past election results, Goh highlighted the substantial support for non-establishment candidates, emphasizing that the people’s desire for an independent president was evident in the 2011 Presidential Election.
Goh, who serves as the chairman of Ossia International, a retail company, believes that amidst the general public angst caused by the current economic climate, voters who typically support establishment candidates may now consider independent candidates like himself. He noted that in 2011, 65 percent of the votes were cast for non-establishment candidates, demonstrating the public’s desire for change.
Speaking at the Elections Department while collecting documents for the Certificate of Eligibility, Goh expressed his readiness for the elected presidency. Over the past seven years, he has diligently prepared himself and his businesses to meet the qualifications required for candidacy. Private sector candidates must have served as the chief executive of a company with an average of S$500 million in shareholders’ equity for at least three years, while maintaining a consistent profit after tax.
Goh assembled a team of professionals, including auditors and accountants, to ensure his eligibility for candidacy. He expressed his belief that he meets the requirements and pledged to submit details about the companies he has founded and incorporated, as well as his shareholder status, to the Presidential Elections Committee.
Addressing voters, Goh encouraged them to look beyond a candidate’s fame and instead focus on their dedication to serving the nation. He emphasized that the key criterion should be the individual’s heartfelt commitment to national service.
George Goh’s announcement to contest the Presidential Election comes shortly after Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s announcement of his intention to run. As the election approaches, Singaporeans eagerly await the unfolding of this important democratic process, which will shape the nation’s future leadership.
