Singapore’s swimmers had a successful day at the Asean Para Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, claiming three gold medals and breaking two Games records in the process.
The swimmers’ outstanding performances brought Singapore’s gold medal tally in the pool at the Morodok Techo National Stadium to seven.
Colin Soon and Wong Zhi Wei kicked off the medal rush on Tuesday (June 6) with a one-two finish in the men’s 100m freestyle S13. Soon, who had already secured gold medals in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB13 and the men’s 50m breaststroke SB14 with Games-record times, completed his hat-trick of titles by setting a new Games record of 59.72 seconds, also breaking the national record. He later added a silver in the men’s 100m backstroke S13.
Sophie Soon, Colin’s sister and a gold medalist in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB13, continued the family’s success with a gold in the women’s 100m butterfly S13. Her time of 1:22.41 not only secured the gold but also set a new national record.
Wong Zhi Wei, who had previously won two silvers and a bronze, finally clinched gold in the men’s 100m butterfly S13, setting a new Games record of 1:03.87.
Danielle Moi, a two-time silver medalist at the Games, contributed to Singapore’s medal tally with a silver in the women’s 100m butterfly S14 and a bronze in the women’s 200m individual medley SM14.
Janelle Tong concluded Team Singapore’s successful day in the pool by securing a bronze in the women’s 200m individual medley SM10. Her time of 3:50.12 also set a new national record, making it her third medal of the Games.
In total, 26 athletes from Team Singapore are competing in athletics, badminton, boccia, powerlifting, swimming, and table tennis at this year’s Asean Para Games.
The event, which started last Sunday and ends on Friday, is being held in Cambodia for the first time.
Singapore currently occupies the sixth position in the medal table, showcasing their strong performance and determination at the games.
