The wife of the missing Singaporean climber on Mount Everest revealed on social media that the search and rescue team’s best efforts were unable to locate him. In an emotional Instagram post, Ms. Sushma Soma paid tribute to her husband, Mr. Shrinivas Sainis Dattatraya, who went missing after successfully reaching the summit on May 19.
Mr. Shrinivas embarked on a challenging expedition, leaving Singapore on April 1, with the ambitious goal of conquering both Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse. If successful, he would have been one of the few individuals in Southeast Asia and the first Singaporean Indian to achieve such a feat.
Tragically, Ms. Soma revealed that Mr. Shrinivas developed High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), a severe altitude sickness that can cause fatigue and loss of coordination, preventing him from descending. She fondly recalled witnessing his unwavering dedication, focus, and discipline in balancing his training and work commitments.
In her heartfelt post, Ms. Soma expressed admiration for her husband’s audacious dreams and highlighted his previous mountaineering accomplishments, including scaling the world’s eighth-highest mountain, Manaslu, which stands at a towering 8,163 meters. It is evident that Mr. Shrinivas deeply understood the significance and challenges associated with pursuing such lofty aspirations.
Accompanied by captivating photographs of Mr. Shrinivas at various majestic peaks like Manaslu, Lenin Peak, and Mera Peak, Ms. Soma included a poignant quote from her husband: “But in the end, the mountain has the last say.”
Ms. Soma extended her gratitude to all involved in the search, particularly Mr. Shrinivas’s guide, Dendi Sherpa, who had been a trusted companion during their daring expeditions in the formidable Himalayan mountains. She also expressed appreciation for the support from friends, family, the Sherpas from the seven summits, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and others who assisted in the search efforts.
With a profound sense of loss, Ms. Soma reflected on her husband’s adventurous spirit, emphasizing his love for exploring the depths of the sea and scaling Earth’s greatest heights. In the mountains, where he felt most at home, Mr. Shrinivas’s indomitable spirit will forever be remembered.
