The scheduled execution of a man over one kilogram of cannabis in Singapore has been urged to be halted by the United Nations Human Rights Office. The OHCHR has called for Tangaraju Suppiah’s execution, set to take place on Wednesday, to be “urgently reconsidered.”
Tangaraju was convicted of conspiracy to traffic 1,017.9 grams of cannabis, which is twice the amount that merits the death sentence in Singapore. The UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has raised concerns about due process and respect for fair trial guarantees, and has called on the authorities not to proceed with the execution.
